In Memoriam

Rui Namorado

30.04.1941 - 13.01.2025

It is with sorrow that CES informs of the passing of our colleague Rui Namorado, currently a Collaborating Researcher but for many years an Associate Researcher at CES. Rui Namorado joined CES in 1987 and held various institutional positions in the almost forty years that he has been linked to the centre. He was a member of the CES Board of Directors, Audit Committee and President of the General Assembly for several years. But it is above all for his important role in the reflection on social economy and cooperativism, and for his invaluable contribution to building the Centre for Social Studies that we remember him.

Rui Namorado was always active in civic life, from the student movements in Coimbra in the 1960s to other formal civic activities. He was a member of parliament for the Socialist Party between 1995 and 1999 and later a member of the National Education Council, among other forms of social participation. His intervention as an author and poet also stands out, having been a member of the Portuguese Society of Authors (SPA) and the Portuguese Association of Legal Authors, and on the editorial board of the journal Vértice between 1964 and 1975, which was an important space for cultural intervention in Portuguese society during the dictatorship.

Today, we honour the critical academic and civic intervention that Rui Namorado maintained throughout his life.
